Joshua Dixon settled the site in 1802 and laid out the town with William Heald in 1805; it became a village in 1837 and a city in 2000. Harvey S. Firestone, founder of Firestone Tire & Rubber, was born on a farm near Columbiana in 1868 — he later donated the land and funding for the 68-acre Firestone Park, and the Firestone Farms development sits on his family homestead.
