Portage County is glacial country in the truest sense — kettle lakes, wetlands and poorly drained till left behind by the ice. The headwaters of the Cuyahoga River run through it. Water tables sit high around the lakes and low-lying wetland margins, and properties near them see basement moisture that has nothing to do with a plumbing failure and everything to do with where the house was built.
Housing stock in Portage County
Kent and Ravenna have older downtown cores plus a heavy concentration of rental housing serving Kent State, where fixtures take more abuse and turnover work is constant. Aurora, Streetsboro and Mantua are largely modern subdivision construction. Outside the cities, the county is rural — farmhouses on acreage, many with additions and plumbing that was added in stages rather than designed at once.

Mixed. Kent, Ravenna, Aurora and Streetsboro run municipal water; the rural townships are predominantly on private wells. Well service, pressure tank work and water treatment make up a much larger share of what we do in Portage than in the Mahoning valley counties.
